"This is unknown territory in the truest sense".

"It's never been done, It's never been tested".

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing", he said at an earlier news conference as his counterparts continued their meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec, and officials hammered out a joint communique.

The two leaders are set to meet on Tuesday morning at the Capella Hotel on the Singaporean resort island of Sentosa.

"There's probably an even better chance that it will take a period of time, it'll be a process", said Trump.

The G7 meeting had threatened to fall apart this week because of the burgeoning trade war.

Trudeau didn't answer when a reporter asked him if he was happy Trump would be leaving the gathering early for a planned summit next week with Kim Jong Un. He has long argued for reciprocal trade, meaning that U.S. tariff rates should be equal to other major trading partners' duties.

Trump's statement was made just before he left: the U.S. president has been at odds with the G-7 countries over mounting import duties disagreements.

While it was only the Italian prime minister who agreed with Trump, British PM Theresa May recognised the importance of engaging with Russian Federation, but she said the country would have to make changed before readmission could be discussed.

"And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavorable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class", the official said.

Trump said he pushed for the elimination of trade barriers, including subsidies and tariffs, at the G-7 meeting.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, June 9, 2018.

'There will not be a sunset clause. we will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires automatically every five years, ' he told a news conference at the end of a Group of Seven summit in Quebec.

"Very dishonest & weak", Trump said, adding that recently imposed U.S. tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum were in response to similar measures imposed on American dairy products by Canada. All three trading partners have threatened to retaliate with their own levies against US imports.

Going into the summit, Mr Trump was at odds with other leaders on issues such as trade, Iran and climate change. Trump said. "Well, I think that very quickly I'll know whether or not something good is going to happen".

Meanwhile, Trump went after Trudeau in a series of tweets just hours before the summit on Friday.

Until recently, Trump had good diplomatic relationships with Macron and Trudeau, but those connections appear to have soured in the past few weeks amid the tariffs controversy.
