The suspected cut melon products were sold in stores including Costco, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Walgreens and Whole Foods in eight states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

So far, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported in five states, including 32 cases in MI.

"In interviews, 55 (74%) of 74 ill people with information available reported contact with chicks or ducklings in the week before their illness started", the CDC said.

The CDC is recalling pre-cut melons, including those found in fruit salads, distribute to several states due to a potential salmonella bacteria contamination.

Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation.

"Because it is possible that products shipped between April 17 and June 7, 2018, could still be on store shelves, this recall extends to both retailers and consumers", said the recall, which includes a list of all products affected.

The outbreak has been connected to pre-cut melon purchased at any Illinois Walmart.

The departments are urging anyone who purchased pre-cut melon at either Walmart or Kroger to throw it away. If you have eaten a contaminated pre-cut melon and experience diarrhea, fever and cramps go see a doctor immediately.

Whole melons are still safe to eat, according to the CDC.

Pre-cut melon sold at Walmart stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, or Ohio. Every year, it makes about 1.2 million people sick, puts 23,000 into the hospital and kills 450 people in the U.S. For some people, though, the diarrhea that accompanies the illness may be severe and require hospitalization.
