Ajit Pai, whom President Trump named to be his new FCC chairman, and who spearheaded the repeal of the net-neutrality rules, killed that inquiry soon after assuming the chairmanship.
Most notably, the repeal removes the Title II classification of broadband internet that put it in line with essential utilities like electricity. Deregulation could potentially change what you can access on the internet. Call our state representatives, call our senators, cry ourselves to sleep, pay more for services we love dearly and hope that our congress does something to right this wrong. That means no speeding up or slowing down connection speeds, and no blocking of specific websites.
While Portney said it's unclear if or when internet consumers could see pay-to-play package deals for certain internet services, but he says it's likely. It also gives them the freedom to charge people more money for faster access, which would likely make the entire internet slower for everyone else. Under its principles, Internet providers shouldn't interfere with your ability to reach the websites, apps or services of your choice. "For example, we empower the Federal Trade Commission to police internet service providers for anticompetitive acts and unfair or deceptive practices", Pai wrote.
However, in the op-ed Pai does not defend against any of the common arguments for Net Neutrality.
So net neutrality's path through Congress is an uphill battle, but some are still optimistic that net neutrality will win out in the end. We still don't and won't block, throttle or discriminate against lawful content.
Whether or not that's been the case, now there's no question that they are allowed to do exactly that.
Zero-rating programs weren't specifically barred under the now-defunct net neutrality protections.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you've heard about the impending death of net neutrality.
Greer predicts that ISPs will first create packages that seem favorable to consumers, such as providing one of their own services for free while tacking on a fee for a rival service. Per the net neutrality order, states can not enact any legislation that attempts to circumvent the repeal.
Pai's primary defense of the FCC's new lax rules on ISPs is the "transparency rule", which requires ISPs to notify consumers of any policies that violate previous Net Neutrality guidelines. Pai said, "The United States is simply making a shift from pre-emptive regulation, which foolishly presumes that every last wireless company is an anti-competitive monopolist, to targeted enforcement based on actual market failure or anti-competitive conduct".
