Suspected Militants Strike Afghan Interior Ministry, Exchange Gunfire With Police

Seven attackers killed as Afghan forces stave off major terror bid

A senior ministry official said one attacker blew himself up inside the compound and another was resisting from a watchtower as a plume of dust and smoke rose over the sprawling site. The statement called it an "immersion attack" on the ministry in Kabul.

More than 50 senior Taliban commanders were killed in an artillery strike on a meeting in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand, a United States military spokesman said on Wednesday.

Police also said they had found a auto stuffed with explosives and guns at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport near the interior ministry on Wednesday.

U.S. Air Force A-10s and an MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone carried out other strikes in the same time period.

The spokesman, Abdul Qadeir Bahadorzai, says Thursday's operation took place in the district of Kajaki and freed 103 people held in two prisons there run by the Taliban.

Both the Taliban and IS frequently target Afghanistan's Western-backed government and its security forces.

Also on May 30, officials said at least three Afghan police officers were killed after a group of suicide bombers attacked a police station in the eastern province of Logar.

Three attackers, wearing military uniforms, detonated explosives while the others were shot by government troops, officials said.

There were also serious incidents in Takhar province in the north, in Loghar, east of the capital, and Kandahar in the south, keeping up a pattern of attacks across the country.

Sources have said National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives were prevented by police force members from entering the area to help end the attack.

US forces killed more than 50 Taliban leaders in a series of strikes against those behind a recent attack in the Helmand provincial capital of Farah, US military and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commander General John Nicholson said on Wednesday. No group immediately claimed responsibility.

And in northern Samangan province, a provincial hospital director was killed when a sticky bomb attached to his auto detonated on Tuesday in the provincial capital, Aybak, according to Sediq Azizi, the provincial spokesman.

But on April 25, the Taliban announced their offensive and since then, the violence has increased, but still stands at a level that's 10 percent to 20 percent below the five-year average, he said.

The Ministry of Interior moved to the new building a year ago - a building which is close to main military bases including the Ministry of Defense and the National Directorate of Security as well as the Hamid Karzai International Airport.
