Zinedine Zidane has stepped down as Real manager but told reporters and fans that his departure was a case of "Hasta pronto" [see you soon].

"I spoke to him (Real president Florentino Perez) to explain a little what I was thinking at the moment".

The Real Madrid legend has taken a path not dissimilar to Zidane by coaching at the lower levels at the club's academy.

"I know it is a unusual moment for everyone involved", said Zidane. He gave me the opportunity to come as a player and now manager and I am eternally grateful. "But everything changes and that's why I've taken the decision to leave".

He played for three seasons there, winning two Champions League titles, and left a year before Zidane joined in 2001.

"After winning the Champions League, the decision was unexpected", he said.

"I would love for him to be by my side forever".

Given the abrupt nature of Zidane's depature, it's unlikely that Real will have any sort of contingency plan in place as to who will succeed him, with a new manager not expected to be earmarked and appointed for a number of weeks. I have learned a lot as a player and a person under you.

"Only one coach has been in charge of Madrid longer than three years in the last 48 years. I am not going to coach another team [right away]".

The former World Player of the Year also won the Champions League in 2002 as a player with Los Blancos, scoring an emphatic volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Hampden Park. He is Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer (211 goals) and won every major trophy available during his 13-year career with the Blues.

"This is a very hard and demanding club; I always said it is like a grinder, it is very exhausting to be there. All I want to do is remind him that this club is his home and family".

Zidane claimed an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League title when Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 on Saturday, capping a remarkable period in his first job in senior club management. "I'm not here to talk about the future of this team". I want to thank the fans - they've always backed me as a manager and as a player.
