She qualified as 7th fastest out of 35 drivers vying for a spot in the legendary race, but unfortunately Patrick's racing career end with a crash, not a victory.

Milwaukee Racing driver Will Davison was on-hand at Indianapolis Motorsport Speedway, as close friend and former rival Will Power became the first Australian to win the Indy 500. The last two laps, the last lap, seeing the white flag, the checkered, I mean, you can't explain it, " Power said. "I just said, "Oh I'm so sorry"... but she was all good". Everyone talks about the 500 and I just couldn't imagine winning a race in front of a crowd like this, this many people.

It's just his day. I couldn't stop screaming on the radio. Power led for 59 of the 200 laps while stomping out his main racing demon. I was here when he finished P2 in 2015, and in the motorhome afterwards I could see how much that hurt.

"He won this race today because he was the best", Penske said. He is the only active driver with three Indy 500 wins and has been eager to get a fourth.

"I've slowly changed to be a more positive person".

Will Power can win anything now, even the Indianapolis 500, an intimidating race on an oval he hated because it marginalised his talent.

Still, she is respected and in some cases revered at Indianapolis, where fans still remember her leading the 2009 race before finishing third. "I don't know if we have a tampering rule in IndyCar, but congrats Will".

"I was definitely nervous", she said, "but I found myself most of the time on the grid feeling confused". Patrick wrecked on the 68th lap. Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Sebastien Bourdais and Danica Patrick were among those who crashed in single-car spins. Defending race victor Takuma Sato crashed out just shy of the race's one-quarter mark after tangling with the much slower machine of James Davison. That put her in good company, as she finished ahead of three-time victor Helio Castroneves and a number of other Indy 500 winners. "We'll certainly take a good luck at that for sure", Penske said.

Castroneves was running near the front before his crash.

Power hits the finish line for victory.

According to the National Weather Service, it was 91 degrees at the track - the second-hottest Indy 500 on record after hitting 92 degrees in 1937 - but drinking the milk is tradition.
