Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been linked with the full-time post recently held by Mark Warburton, until February a year ago, and Pedro Caixinha, until October.

The former Liverpool and England captain, who is now in charge of the Under-18s side at Anfield, plans to hold further discussions with the Scottish Premiership club later this week.

Both Sutton and Gerrard work as part of BT Sport's coverage for the Champions League and Premier League.

"I've held positive talks with them. I'm busy now for a couple of days now but I will pick it up on Thursday and we'll see if we can progress it".

Rangers sacked manager Graeme Murty with three matches left in the season on Tuesday after an embarrassing 5-0 loss to arch-rivals Celtic, who won their seventh straight league title at the weekend.

Murty was initially installed as interim boss in October following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha, before being handed the role until the end of the campaign in December.

Rangers added that Murty "will take some time to consider his options, which include returning to his role at the Rangers Academy".

Rangers are third in the table, three points adrift of Aberdeen.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has urged Liverpool U18 coach Steven Gerrard to accept Rangers' approach.

Gerrard says talks with the Glasgow club have been "positive" and will continue later this week.

"If it feels right, I think he can handle that pressure from his playing days, he's no stranger to that with the career he had in the game".

However, an opportunity to test himself as a manager has arisen for only the second time since his retirement after he turned down MK Dons' offer last season, and it seems Gerrard is keen to take it.
