Stormy Daniels Sues Trump for Defamation Over Tweet, Days After a Judge Put Her Initial Lawsuit On Hold

Stephanie Clifford also known as Stormy Daniels speaks to media along with lawyer Michael Avenatti outside federal court in the Manhattan borough of New York City New York U.S

Stormy Daniels' attorney has filed that threatened defamation lawsuit against President Donald Trump.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, lodged the complaint with the US District Court for the Southern District of NY.

Trump's lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"Ms Clifford has suffered damage as a result of Mr Trump's false and defamatory statement in an amount to be proven at trial but in excess of $75,000", it said.

Clifford argues that Mr. Trump's statement paints her as a liar and that it has exposed her "to hatred, contempt, ridicule, and shame, and discouraged other from associating or dealing with her".

"We look forward to requiring Mr. Trump to answer questions under oath about his conduct", Avenatti told Business Insider on Monday.

"We filed a lawsuit against trump for his latest frivolous and defamatory statements about my client Stormy Daniels".

The President, who is also a defendant in that lawsuit, has denied any sexual encounter between the two. She contends the agreement is invalid because Trump never personally signed it.

Avenatti suggested on Twitter Monday that Trump knew about the alleged threat and had some role in it. "Forget the story, '" Daniels told CNN in March. The man then looked at Daniels' young daughter and said, "That's a attractive little girl".

The harrowing incident happened a few weeks after Daniels agreed to discuss the alleged tryst with In Touch magazine - which was tipped off about the matter by her ex-husband, her suit says. She and her attorney Michael Avenatti publicly released a sketch of the suspect on April 17.

Trump referred to man as "nonexistent", and called the police sketch "a total con job".

"Mr. Trump knows that his personal Twitter account has an audience of over 50 million followers and that the Twitter post would be repeated and reported upon by other news and media outlets online, in print, and on television and radio".

Cohen asked for a delay after Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided his home and office several weeks ago. They seized recordings he had made of his conversations with Daniels' former lawyer, Keith Davidson.

A woman has filed a lawsuit for libel.

"I'm not at liberty to get into that".

The Trump campaign has dished out almost $228,000 to cover legal fees for the President's embattled personal attorney Michael Cohen, thereby potentially violating political finance laws, according to federal records.

"You're allowed to express opinions without running afoul of defamation law, even as a president", Sandick said.

This particular round of legal maneuvering involves a sketch and a tweet. "There's a very, very strong argument to make that this case will get tossed by a judge at an early stage", Callan said. Daniels' attorney said at the time that he was considering an appeal.
