In December, US President Donald Trump announced that he would transfer his embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel, causing global criticism and Palestinian protests.

Breaking with decades of U.S. diplomacy and global consensus President Donald Trump announced on December 6 the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the embassy, located until now in Tel Aviv.

Guatemala has already relocated its embassy to Jerusalem and will officially open the facility on May 16, in a ceremony that may be attended by President Jimmy Morales.

"By recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the seat of its government, we're recognizing reality", U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a visit to Israel last week.

Trump has been coy as to whether or not he would attend the ceremony, and Monday's statement did not list him as an attendee indicating he will not make an appearance.

Israel's police spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld, said officers were assessing the level of security needed for theopening, including deploying CCTV cameras and guards in the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Arnona, where the current U.S. consulate is being retrofitted to become the embassy.

"Strengthening settlements in Judea and Samaria is first and foremost in Israel's security interest", said Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, using the biblical names favoured by pro-settlement Israelis for the north and south West Bank. The city is claimed by Muslims, Christians and Jews to be historically important for them. The Palestinians seek the eastern sector as capital of their hoped-for state.

US Ambassador David Friedman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are scheduled to address the crowd and a video illustrating the 70-year-old friendship between the US and Israel is set to be played, the Times of Israel reported.

The global community, the Arab League and other groups urged the United States president to reconsider.
