Blankenship bid divides West Virginia, as GOP primary rivals praise Trump intervention

What You Need To Know About Tuesday's Primaries

Senator Elizabeth Warren questions Alex Azar during a Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on his nomination to be Health and Human Services secretary on Capitol Hill in Washington U.S

"Swamp Captain Mitch McConnell has contributed tens of thousands of jobs to China Folks", Mr. Blankenship stated in 1 firm, alluding to the shipping work of Mr. McConnell's father in law, an American citizen.

President Donald Trump tweeted Monday that Republicans will lose the West Virginia Senate race if Don Blankenship prevails in tomorrow's GOP primary.

Don Blankenship, the former mining tycoon who was sent to jail in 2016 for his culpability in the deaths of 29 miners who worked for him, is making a last-minute surge in the Republican primary for a key West Virginia Senate seat - and his own party is not at all happy about it. McConnell, who has opposed Blankenship's Senate run, is married to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao. Last month, Trump invited two of them, Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R), to appear with him at a White House event on taxes.

The President adds his voice to the national Republicans who are anxious that Blankenship's upstart campaign could upend plans to run either Republican Rep. Evan Jenkins or Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who are seen as more electable, against vulnerable Democratic Sen. The victor would take on Democratic Senator Joe Manchin in November.

While Blankenship has made national headlines for his attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he's widely known across the Mountain State for his involvement in the coal industry and Republican politics.

Blankenship is among the top Republican contenders, according to a GOP-based poll conducted at the end of March.

Trump supported Moore, who was accused of sexual assault against children, in the race against Democrat Doug Jones.

"The President is a very busy man and he doesn't know me and he doesn't know how flawed my two main opponents are in this primary ..."

Blankenship has repeatedly explained away his time behind bars by saying that the mine explosion was a conspiracy orchestrated by the Obama administration while peppering in comparisons of himself and former South African President Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years as a political prisoner. They are "China people", Blankenship said in a recent ad. "Remember Alabama. Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey!"

"No more fumbles like Alabama", he said. Not on what Blankenship has said or what he believes. Trump wrote on the social media platform.

When Moore defeated odd in the primary, Trump quickly backed Moore and essentially disavowed his support of unusual, deleting his tweets about the latter.

Mr. Jenkins also claimed that he'd been endorsed by the president.

Trump's tweet on Blankenship starkly reveals both of those character traits. "Trump's tweet opposing him could be the final ingredient for what every other surprise win has required this cycle".
