Arizona Teachers Say They'll Go Back To School If Budget Is Passed

More significant, Ducey has agreed to an average 9 percent pay hike for teachers for the coming school year, with a 5 percent increase the following year and an identical increase the year after that.

The House was continuing to debate the budget package as sunrise approached Thursday morning but passage was assured. The Arizona Republic reports that as of this writing, more than a dozen districts had announced they would be canceling classes Thursday.

Some Arizona school districts will stay closed during a statewide walkout by teachers.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Legislature is meeting Wednesday to try to pass a budget plan in the midst of teacher protests outside.

They're also pushing lawmakers for other considerations such as a 10 percent raise for support staff. Gonzalez spoke of horror stories from teachers in some of the larger school districts in the state - leaky roofs, long-term substitute teachers and high teacher-to-student ratios.

Phoenix teacher Rebecca Garelli, and Arizona Educators United member, makes the official announcement from protest organizers that teachers intend to go back to work as the state wide teachers strike enters a fourth day at the Arizona Capitol Tuesday, May 1, 2018, in Phoenix.

Many schools plan to re-open Thursday, and it remains unclear if the developments at the Capitol will change that.

Leaders of education groups had said Tuesday that teachers would go back to their classrooms today.

The bill was approved Wednesday afternoon with support only from majority Republicans. The teachers' strikes in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Arizona have been described by some as a "red-state revolt". Randall Friese read Noah Karvelis' remarks where he praised striking teachers for getting big wins in the budget.

"This budget does not do enough for our kids".

The Arizona Senate has passed a $10.4 billion state budget plan that provides more than $300 million in raises for numerous state's striking teachers after working all night.

He said he wants voters to pass a measure called the Invest in Education Act that would have $750 million for education.

The House was still debating the budget package Thursday morning but passage was assured.

Avondale middle school teacher Scott Gebbie says he hopes to be back in class Thursday but will keep striking if there is no movement on the budget.

"This budget supports Arizona's top priorities by improving the public education system and rewarding our teachers", Ducey tweeted out on Tuesday in support of his plan.

Red-clad teachers in the #RedforEd movement gathered Wednesday on the mall between the House and Senate buildings a day before their historic walkout for education funding is set to end. School funding has not increased in the state since cuts were made during the Great Recession.

Organizers said the walkout was a success due to the 150,000 people that hit the streets during the four days in downtown Phoenix and increased amount of money promised for education.

But it's basically the same budget proposal that Republican Gov. Doug Ducey rolled out two weeks ago, which AEU found wasn't good enough at the time.

As the teachers were marching on the Capitol, where Phoenix police estimated more than 50,000 people were present April 26, the education leaders questioned the governor and Legislature who adjourned until (April 30).
