Rather than open an office north of the American border and immediately rush back below to hire Americans, Klugen believes Amazon will first look locally before going to other Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Waterloo and Toronto.

Amazon plans to add 2,000 workers to its research and development office in Boston, the company announced Tuesday, confirming reports that the retailer would move into a new waterfront complex in the city. "Environmental strategies will be employed at all stages of construction and operation, making the Post a benchmark for responsible and financially prudent development", said Remco Daal, president, Canadian Real Estate, QuadReal.

Amazon said the new 416,000 square foot tech hub, called the "Development Centre", will be built on top of a re-developed post office building and is expected to open in 2022.

Amazon employed about 566,000 full- and part-time employees worldwide at the end of December, and on Monday announced it was hiring 3,000 people in Vancouver.

Amazon said the additional jobs will be in e-commerce technology, cloud computing and machine learning.

"The new jobs that we'll be creating at Amazon, like those we already have, will be corporate positions with most being specialized high-tech roles", said Jesse Dougherty, manager of Amazon web services. More than 6,000 people now work for Amazon in Canada, including 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver at several sites.

Since 2011, Amazon has created more than 3,500 jobs in MA.

Amazon formally announced Tuesday plans to expand its presence in MA.

Amazon now employs over 6,000 people across Canada, with 1,000 of them based in Vancouver at the company's Telus Garden location, which opened in 2015. The company expects to have approximately 5,000 employees in Vancouver in the near future, GeekWire reports.
