US staffer suffers brain injury after'sound incident in China

A USA consulate worker in southern China has a mild traumatic brain injury, after reporting abnormal sensations of sound and pressure, the U.S. embassy has said.

The US State Department is looking into whether the report is similar to incidents in Cuba in 2016 and 2017, an American official told CNN, in which so-called "sonic attacks" on diplomats and family members led to a reduction in staffing there.

"The [US] Department [of State] is taking this incident very seriously and is working to determine the cause and impact of the incident", Lee said. The Chinese government has assured the USA that it is investigating the matter and taking appropriate measures, according to a State Department spokesperson.

The cause of the injuries is now unknown, and no other employees have experienced similar symptoms at this time.

The State Department says a USA government employee working in China suffered "subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure" that later led to a diagnosis of "mild traumatic brain injury" - resulting in a warning to all U.S. citizens in the country.

The US Embassy in Beijing learned on May 18 that the clinical findings of the evaluation matched that of a "mild traumatic brain injury", an embassy spokeswoman told CNN.

Earlier this year, the State Department announced that the Havana embassy will permanently withdraw 60 percent of its employees from Cuba following the sonic attacks. The mployee was sent back to the United States for assessment.

"The US government is taking these reports seriously and has informed its official staff in China of this event", it added.

USA diplomats there experienced possible "sonic attacks", and the US eventually reduced the number of American employees there.

The federal employee reported experiencing physical symptoms from late 2017 through April 2018, when he or she returned to the USA for medical evaluation.

Suspected "sonic attacks" affecting more than a dozen USA diplomats and family members in Havana beginning in November 2016 led to the U.S.

China's Foreign Ministry are investigating the incident in Guangzhou but is yet to comment. "Instead, move to a location where the sounds are not present".

Around November 2016, U.S. diplomats based in Cuba started to complain of odd ailments, including dizziness, nausea and hearing problems. Previous victims of similar attacks in Cuba suffered permanent hearing loss, severe headaches, loss of balance, brain swelling, and disruption to cognitive functions.

The cause of those incidents remains unresolved.
