Trump says Syria attack could be 'soon or not so soon'

US President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with senior military leaders at the White House in Washington DC

President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that the United States will strike Syria.

Prior to that allegation - and Trump's airstrikes on Assad assets in response - the Syrian dictator had said that Trump's public claims that he was eager to withdraw the USA military from the country were "promising" but lamented that Trump did not engage directly with him.

Trump on Thursday also suggested he did not get enough credit for U.S. gains against ISIS in the region. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

Fears of confrontation between Russian Federation and the West have been running high since Trump said on Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" after the suspected chemical weapons assault in the Syrian town of Douma on April 7, and lambasted Moscow for standing by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Earlier on Thursday French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that he has the proof for the usage of chemical weapons during an air strike at Douma in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday warned that threats of Western military action in response to an alleged chemical attack would only lead to further chaos in the region.

President Trump hit back at the comments and said: "Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

Asked whether the USA military was ready to conduct an attack in Syria if ordered, Mattis replied, "We stand ready to provide military options if they're appropriate, as the president determined". "Final decisions haven't been made yet on that front", she said, and no timeline for any strikes had been established.

Russian Federation operates out of airfields in Syria, but it's unclear if the United States will target those bases. France has also said it would join the military action.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Wednesday that the USA wasn't afraid to target Russian assets in its strike on Syria, but a report from a Russian website says the U.S. has been coordinating with Russia to avoid hitting its troops, and will provide a list of targets before a strike to avoid escalating warfare between the world's two greatest nuclear powers. There were no plans, however, for President Vladimir Putin to talk directly with Mr. Trump. That conversation will take place behind closed doors at a meeting of the National Security Council on Thursday afternoon.

"They know we are there, I wish there was dialect though the proper channels on this to avert any unsafe developments", he said.

In recent years, thanks to the war in Syria, the marina has returned to the eastern Mediterranean, where it was absent after the disintegration of the USSR.

USA officials are acknowledging the risk of retaliation drawing Washington and Moscow - both of which have troops in Syria - into direct military conflict.

"These weapons are created to survive all of the way to their target", he said.

"They are the guarantors of law and order in the town", RIA news agency quoted Russia's defence ministry as saying.

Russian military police, who had started deploying in the town as part of a deal that would allow some rebels to disarm and stay in Douma, also left after the incident, the residents said.

Ali Akbar Velayati, the top adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said during a visit to Damascus on Tuesday that an Israeli attack on an air base in Syria earlier this week would "not remain without response". He said the president has not yet decided whether military force would be part of a USA response in Syria.

Meanwhile, the Russian military said the Syrian government is now in full control of Duoma, once held by rebels opposing Assad. In a joint statement, the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) and Syrian American Medical Society have said victims of the attack exhibited, "symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent".
