Israel Mulls Building 'Trump Town' for Foreign Embassies in Jerusalem
President Donald Trump says he may travel to Israel next month to open the new US embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem al-Quds despite widespread Palestinian anger and global condemnation.
Preparations for the construction of a new embassy quarter in Jerusalem have kicked off in Israel, with the relevant top officials being ordered to start the planning process, The Jerusalem Post reported citing Israeli Construction Minister Yoav Gallant.
Washington, however, says the diplomatic mission will be relocated from Tel Aviv to al-Quds next month to coincide with the anniversary of the day in 1948 when Israel was proclaimed as an entity after a catastrophic war with Arab nations.
U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman allegedly told the president that the embassy move could be done for a mere $150,000. I can take a corner of the building, and for Dollars 150,000, we can fix it up, make it attractive, open our embassy. I said, "What are you talking about, a billion dollars?" We have a building.
Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu during the president's visit to Israel in May 2017.
Asked by a visitor to NY if he thought there was a chance that the Trump administration would commute his sentence and allow him to go to Israel, he responded, "I am praying for a miracle". But I said, 'David, let's not go from $1 billion to $150,000. We own the building.
The current American plan, according to the PNN, is to announce the existing consular building in southern Jerusalem as the embassy's location, and move only a small number of offices from the embassy in Tel Aviv to that building, as an initial step.
"But that's the way government works. They were going to spend $1 billion and we're going to spend much less than $500,000".
Cartes intends to complete the move before he leaves office in June as a means to honor the history of mutual respect and global relations shared between himself and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
