Republican Gov. Mary Fallin approved teacher pay raises of about $6,100, but many educators say their classrooms need more money.

The demonstrations, which will mostly happen before the start of the school day, are meant to build more support from parents and school administrators.

Oklahoma's education department is extending the time period for students to take standardized tests as the state's teacher walkout enters its second week.

NonDoc's editor in chief speaks with Bryan Fried and Spencer Guinn of FKG Consulting in a teacher walkout podcast recorded Thursday afternoon, one day before the Oklahoma State Senate sent three bills to the governor.

A historic teacher strike in Oklahoma may hurt the state's blood supply, since 20 percent of blood donations come from high school blood drives, reportsKTUL.

Teachers are urging lawmakers to pass new legislation, arguing that schools in the state need more funding.

But behind the scenes, superintendents are discussing the logistics of a work stoppage. Governor Matt Bevin and the state legislature are slashing retiree benefits as they reduce taxes for corporations and the wealthy.

West Virginia teachers were on strike for nine consecutive school days.

"We hope capital gains goes back to the table and that is what we are really waiting for", said Barbara Bayless, a teacher from Choctaw, Governing.com reported.

"We aren't going to shut up, we aren't done, this movement has gelled us together", Madeline Jacobsen, a third-grade teacher from Tulsa, told the Guardian. "We are here to do what's right for the kids of Oklahoma".

"This year's education budget, which spends $2.9 billion (a 22 percent increase), has been signed into law".

Teachers and supporters were also marching from a number of cities to the Capitol, with some walking more than 100 miles and arriving Monday.

Leaders of the Arizona Educators United say they could announce a date for action at any time.

The unions insist the funding crisis must be resolved by "working within the system" on a state-by-state basis, which invariably means supporting increases in regressive taxes or cuts in other vital services to make up for trillions being squandered at every level of the government to fund bank bailouts, corporate tax cuts and endless wars for big business.

Val expressed the determination of rank-and-file teachers to continue the strike for their demands of wage and school funding increases.
