Puerto Rico has been plagued by several blackouts in recent months, including a major outage last week that affected roughly 840,000 people.

The blackout was caused by the failure of a 230-kilovolt line between the oil-fired Aguirre generating complex in Salinas and AES Corp.'s coal-fired power plant in Guayama, according to the utility.

The more than million customers with power represented some 80 percent of the power authority's customers and Quiñones said crews were working vigorously to restore power to those customers who had power before Wednesday's blackout. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is overseeing the federal power restoration efforts, said they hope to have the entire island fully energized by May.

Electrical service in Puerto Rico was largely restored Thursday following an islandwide disruption Wednesday that officials said was caused via an operational mistake by an electrical subcontractor. Cobra, a subsidiary of Mammoth Energy Services, is based in Oklahoma and was formed last spring.

Is Puerto Rico ready for hurricane season?

The company reported a 63 percent gain in its stock price after its contract in Puerto Rico had grown to a whopping $945 million to restore power to Puerto Rico, The Oklahoman newspaper reported.

The entire island of Puerto Rico lost power on Wednesday.

Nearly two months after making that announcement, conditions are far from normal in Puerto Rico.

M - After seven months and close to $2.5 billion, nearly everybody in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico had their lights back on - until a freak accident on Wednesday plunged the entire island once again into darkness, NYTimesreported.

"Well, right now we're still as motivated as ever", Major Carrasco said.

Tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans living in communities located in the east and central regions of the island had yet to see their lights come back on since the hurricane.

The blackout comes as Puerto Rico legislators debate whether to private the island's Electric Power Authority, which is $14 billion in debt and relies on infrastructure almost three times older than the industry average. In a statement, it said a 140-foot electric transmission tower in southern Puerto Rico collapsed on Tuesday and fell across support wires of an adjacent tower in "an extremely congested" electric transmission corridor. Wednesday was the first island-wide blackout since Hurricane Maria tore through on September 20, 2017.

PREPA's interim director, Justo Gonzalez, told the local Telemundo news station that his workers are investigating whether the outage was caused by an internal failure or an external force.
