San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard

San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich said the Spurs' forward is continuing his injury rehabilitation in NY with his own team of doctors, but is unsure when Leonard and "his group" will clear him to play.

"He's trying to get well", Popovich said. He spent time in NY before the February All-Star break. After missing the start of the season, Leonard returned for only nine games and it is unclear what his status is as the playoffs approach. A Lakers Nation podcast in late February talked about a possible summer trade that would send Lonzo Ball and some draft picks to San Antonio in exchange for Leonard, and the rumors have only gotten louder since then.

Asked if Leonard returned to NY to try to get clearance for a return to the lineup this season, Popovich said: "He's trying to get well".

"I don't know when he's going to feel, he and his group are going to feel like they're ready to go", Popovich said.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was asked whether the team is making an effort to keep Leonard engaged and feel as if he's a part of the team. "If I knew, he'd be here". Leonard is still hoping to return to the Spurs during the regular season as they contend for home-court advantage in the West.

"Sometimes you feel like an alien to the core group and you've got to fight through it", Ginobili said. "Of course that's the objective [of his stay in New York], to get well, that's what he's doing". He has not played since January 13.

Led by LaMarcus Aldridge's best season with the team, San Antonio is fourth in the tight Western Conference. He averaged 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks this season.

The announcement comes after a reported player's only meeting to address Leonard's injury.

Added up, the playoffs are about to commence and San Antonio has no clue whether it will have the services of the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
