Following Humboldt Broncos bus crash, BC sees sixfold increase in organ donor registrations

The Local Take Talks Organ Donation, LIFELINK and the Battle for Life Campus Challenge

"The increase in donations and transplants is made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and their families". "We're there from the beginning of the process to as much as two years out or longer for families that want to keep in contact with us or want to come to events that honor those donors".

Those interested in registering as an organ donor can do so at the B.C. Transplant website.

"On that day, the number of new registrations in Ontario was four times what we typically see on a Sunday".

President and CEO of the Ontario Trillium Gift of Life Network Ronnie Gavsie says they saw the numbers shoot up following the news coming out last Sunday that Boulet was a donor.

"As Logan's family has said, 'Even in his eventual passing, he will be a selfless hero.' I couldn't agree more".

"Receiving a transplant gives you another chance at life".

According to reports, only 20% of Canadians have card potential organ donors, although, according to surveys, 90% of the population support this initiative.

She thinks the conversation around organ donations should begin in schools. In every city, the zonal organ transplant committee helps the needy patient waiting for organs.

Michelle Vanderhart, a mother of three in Fort MacCleod, Alta., said her two-year-old son Mason is one of the people for whom the decision to register could mean the difference between life and death.

For the first year ever, more than 1,500 people in the United Kingdom donated their organs after they died, with the number rising by 11 percent over the previous year.

Neil Langevin, Boulet's godfather, said in a statement that six people were set to receive the "gift of life" from the young man, and his other organs would be donated to science.

"The decision to donate organs is a powerful gift, made more poignant because it often happens at an incredibly hard time", said Alberta Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman.
