In line with the most positive opinion polls for the party before the election, Fidesz appears to have won the exact number of seats needed for a super-majority in parliament, with 67 percent of seats from just under 50 percent of the vote, according to official results. However, with almost all votes counted, results show Jobbik trailing far behind with 19.67 percent, the Socialists on 12.42 percent and the environmentalist LMP party on 6.97 percent.
Harper was chosen to chair the centre-right think tank in February at the organization's meeting of party leaders in Spain.
The high turnout had initially caused excitement among the opposition. The report noted the overlap between government ads and Fidesz ads that "blurred the line between state and party" and found that state media "clearly favored" the government.
"The election, in my view, also. decided that the Hungarian government must stand up for a Europe of nations and not for a 'United States of Europe, '" the PM said.
Critics charge Orban with weakening the democratic system of checks and balances, enriching a new oligarch class of cronies with the help of funds from the European Union and greatly concentrating power.
Orban has repeatedly described civic groups supported by Soros, and in general any non-governmental group he disagrees with, as foreign agents working against Hungarian interests.
However, nationalists and those on the far-right who admire Orban's strident brand of identity politics and claims to be a protector of "Christian Europe" will take comfort in the result.
"We are fighting an enemy that is different from us", he said in March in Budapest. The 54-year-old prime minister of Hungary added: "We believe that a large number of Muslims inevitably leads to parallel societies, because Christian and Muslim society will never unite".
When asked by Bild whether it was fair for Germany to accept hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants while Hungary accepted none, Orban responded: "The difference is, you wanted the migrants, and we didn't".
