CWG 2018: Vikas Thakur settles for bronze in men's 94kg weightlifting

Canada fought strongly for possession and were impressive in defence against New Zealand throughout the game.

England's Sarah Davies took silver with 217 kg, while Apolonia Vaivai of Fiji lifted 216 kg for the bronze. Find us on Facebook too! Defending champion Steven Kari of Papua New Guinea won a second consecutive CWG title with a total of 370 kg.

Vikas Thakur on Sunday had to settle for bronze in the men's 94kg weightlifting category, a climbdown from his silver at the Glasgow Games in 2014.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Punam Yadav won gold in the Women's 69kg weightlifting category.

Davies went for a 128kg lift in her final clean and jerk attempt in pursuit of gold but could not complete her attempt. This is the first ever GOLD medal for Indian's women's team.

The gold rush continued in weightlifting for India as Punam Yadav added a fifth to the tally with a top finish in the 69kg category of the 21Commonwealth Games today. Punam lifted 98 kg in her second attempt but Vaivai maintained the lead with 100 kg. On Saturday, weightlifters Sathish Kumar Sivalingam and Rahul Venkat Ragala added to medal haul by winning gold medals.

Yadav started slowly, lifting 95 kg in her opening attempt. His lift broke the Commonwealth and the Games record in clean and jerk.

Once the bar is lifted overhead, the competitor must remain motionless, arms and legs extended, with the bar and body in a straight line, until the referees make a decision which automatically registers as a visual and audible signal to replace the barbell to the platform. But her attempt proved futile as she failed to lift that weight, sparking celebrations in the Indian camp. As the competition progressed, Bhaker fired 10, 10.3, 10.6, a sensational 10.9 and a 10.4, which put her in the lead position for gold.
