Armenian ruling party spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov told reporters Saturday that the party will not submit any candidate for the post of new prime minister in order to avoid the escalation of political tensions in the country.

Armenian protest leader Nikol Pashinyan yesterday rallied support for his bid to become prime minister following the resignation of veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian as a major opposition party readied its choice. But the parliament, which is controlled by ruling Republican Party, installed him as prime minister in April and curbed the powers of the president.

An opposition leader from Yelk bloc and the founder and head of Civil Contract party, Nikol Pashinyan leads a campaign throughout Armenia against the ruling authorities.

Armenia's parliament plans to choose a replacement on Tuesday for Serzh Sargsyan, who resigned last week after demonstrations over his selection.

As protests continue in Armenia, there is no end in sight to the political crisis engulfing the small South Caucasus nation.

Armenian opposition supporters attend a rally in Gyumri, yesterday. "The acting Prime Minister believes that participating in negotiations that aren't likely to bring results have no prospects", the statement said.

According to the correspondent, the protesters are in good spirits; they sing songs and chant slogans, criticizing the ruling party.

HHK holds 58 seats in the 105-seat parliament, and without its support Pashinian is unlikely to be elected. Dashnaktsutyun has also said it will vote for Pashinian.

Although the demonstrations have been peaceful, the upheaval has threatened to destabilise Armenia, an ally of Russian Federation, in a volatile region riven by Armenia's decades-long, low-level conflict with neighbouring Azerbaijan.

"It was emphasised that resolving the political crisis in Armenia must take place exclusively through legal means in the framework of the current constitution", the Kremlin said. "The country is going towards complete destruction if we keep going this way".

The U.S. State Department weighed in on Armenia's political standoff late on April 28, saying it continues to "closely" monitor the situation.

Pashinian met with several members of Russia's Duma on April 29 and reassured them that Armenia will remain a close ally and partner.
