The person of interest, identified as 29-year-old Armando Juarez, was taken into custody after a police chase ended off Lemmon Avenue near Dallas Love Field about 9 p.m. Tuesday, sources told WFAA.

In a tweet about the shooting on Tuesday evening, the Dallas Police Department said the officers were critically wounded, but Hall declined to go into detail about their conditions during two news conferences at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. The two officers and the store loss-prevention officer underwent surgery for their injuries, Police Chief U. Renee Hall said late on Tuesday night.

"I continue to be upset at the lack of respect of our police in this city and in our country", said Mayor Mike Rawlings, who also attended the hospital news conference.

It's unclear how the shooting unfolded but authorities began looking for the gunman after he fled in a white pickup, Hall had said. A civilian was also shot and the incident sparked a manhunt, police said.

More than a dozen police cars and a police search dog were on the scene and searching for the suspect.

The officer detained a suspect and requested additional cover officers to place the suspect under arrest.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with [Dallas Police Department] and the two officers shot and critically wounded".

Also, multiple agencies are assisting in the investigation, she said, including local, state and federal agencies. Johnson later died in a standoff with police.

We will provide updates as information becomes available.
