In an apparent throwback to the politics of a different century, two statues of the Soviet Communist leader Vladimir Lenin have been torn down in north-east India, leading to retaliatory measures against a figurine of rightwing Hindu leader.

Bharatiya Janata Party's Tamil Nadu chief Tamilisai Soundararajan on Wednesday expelled party worker R Muthuraman, who was arrested on Tuesday for damaging a statue of social reformer EV Ramaswamy - also known as Periyar - in Vellore.

The fresh incidents of vandalism followed bulldozing of Communist hero Lenin's statue in Tripura on Monday, an act condoned by some BJP leaders.

The bust of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was damaged by activists of Left-leaning outfit "Radical" in south Kolkata today. The police have arrested two men.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his strong disapproval of statues being vandalised in parts of the country.

However, leaders of opposition Left parties would not join the programme in protest against post-poll violence in the state, said Dhar, also CPI (M) state secretary.

Restoration of the bust has been initiated, he said. Dravidam, he said, was imposed on Tamils and Dravida Nadu comprised people living in States where Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Tulu and Malayalam were spoken. Police stopped them before they reached Periyar statue.

President of Makkal Neethi Maiam (MNM), actor Kamal Haasan, said he wondered if the ongoing controversy was aimed at diverting attention from the Cauvery issue. We need to focus on the fact that there is no Cauvery Management Board yet. The Home Ministry has also issued an advisory which says that the District Magistrates and the Superintendents of Police will be "personally responsible" for such incidents of vandalism.

Banerjee said TMC had no ambition of playing a lead role in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but would help the process of forming a common front against the BJP.

Party president Amit Shah was quick to react.

The Home Minister has appealed to political parties to ensure that those found desecrating statues are dealt with strictly. All over the state statues of Periyar was provided with police protection. "These incidents can never be justified", Rajnath told reporters outside Parliament.
