Waymo to create luxury, self-driving electric car with Jaguar
Waymo says the four-door Jaguar cars, which are being shown at New York's International Auto Show this week, will hit the road later this year in Phoenix, Arizona, where it will coincide with the launch of Waymo's self-driving vehicle service. Waymo is eager to work with more automakers to secure its lead in autonomous technology, as it prepares to launch a commercial ride-hailing service.
It's also significant that the integration of Waymo's sensors and self-driving technology will be built into these I-Paces at the factory in Graz, Austria.
United Kingdom -based Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its first pure electric vehicle (EV), the I-Pace, back in 2016, though the vehicle's not scheduled to go to market until later this year.
The Senate is also trying to fast-track regulations, but even at a rapid pace by government standards, rules for self-driving vehicles are likely to develop more slowly than technology companies are accustomed to.
More broadly, Waymo's automotive partnerships help to support the Google subsidiary's autonomous driving ambitions as rivals Tesla and Uber race to put self-driving cars on the road. A video showcased some of Waymo's early riders, who have been test-passengers for the project, and the various different vehicles they have been transported in. The current fleet of Chrysler Pacifica minivans are capacious but boringly earnest; the homegrown Google "pod" cars were always cute, but never cool.
Toyota Motor Corp. said last week it was temporarily pausing autonomous vehicle testing following the Uber crash on US public roads to help its test drivers, who could be experiencing "an emotional effect" from the incident. The I-PACE is all-wheel drive, but there's no driveshaft running the length of the SUV to connect the rear wheels to the front. Speth says his company is already getting strong interest in the I-Pace from interested customers.
Waymo's driverless transportation service is planned to launch later this year, allowing members of the public to use its app to request a vehicle in the US.
