A water heater is the source of a gas leak suspected of killing an Iowa family in Mexico, according to a prosecutor in Mexico.

Family members of Kevin and Amy Sharp and their two children - 12-year-old Sterling Wayne Sharp and 7-year-old Adrianna Marie Sharp - were making funeral arrangements today, a day after Mexican authorities informed them that autopsies showed their relatives died as a result of "asphyxiation by inhalation of toxic gases".

Officials in Mexico located the family at the condominium in Akumal they were renting at a resort and later said that the family died due to inhaling toxic gases. The Sharps were supposed to return to the United States on Wednesday evening, leaving Cancun around 2:45 p.m. and arriving in St. Louis at about 6 p.m., family members said. Local authorities' states that there were no signs of foul play or signs of violence in the crime scene and were able to rule out suicide.

An online memorial fund has been set up for the family.

They performed "physical inspection of the room's gas installation" and are expected to release a technical report at a later date.

"They just thought it was the best place in the world to be", Fry said Monday.

The state attorney general's office in the state of Quintana Roo said investigators were still trying to determine what kind of gas was involved.

Then, the family tracked Kevin Sharp's phone using Apple's Find my iPhone app. The Sharps were supporters of the Creston, Iowa-based school. But the extended family waited until Thursday night to call authorities in case the Sharps had problems with their flight.

Bob Harris, the longtime public address announcer at the track, told the Des Moines Register that Sharp was nicknamed "The Sharpshooter" and hailed him as a "true family man".

The Sharps rented the condo through Vacation Rentals By Owner, or VRBO, HomeAway, the parent company of VRBO, told NBC News. "So she feels that she lost half her family".

Kevin was a salesman for the beer distributor Southwest Distributing Co., and Amy was a dental-claims specialist for Principal Financial in Des Moines.

Kevin Sharp also was an avid stock vehicle racer, known as "the Sharpshooter" in the local racing scene, and he often competed in events in his neighboring county, friend and fellow racer Cliff Baldwin told the Des Moines Register. "He's a big part of that community there". She loved her family and was always there for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"One way or another, we will".
