Walmart launches meal kits

Walmart pushes its meal kit business with plans to roll out to 2000 stores this year

Walmart to offer prepared meals at its stores

Albertsons acquired meal kit service Plated in September 2017 and is introducing the product into Albertsons stores; and Kroger is testing and producing new meal kit recipes through its recently launched Culinary Innovation Center.

The goal is to offer the kits at more than 2,000 stores by the end of the year.

The four pre-portioned meals are steak Dijon, basil garlic chicken, pork Florentine and sweet chili chicken stir fry.

The selections are assembled in stores daily and available in the deli section or through the company's online grocery pickup service.

Pre-portioned meal kits include prepped ingredients that consumers can cook at home.

The rotisserie chicken meal kit options include Thai curry chicken and chicken fried rice.

Finally, one step meals are a heat-and-eat option with several main courses, including Chicken Alfredo, Cheesy Ravioli Bake, Meatloaf, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Chicken Parmesan, Pulled Beef, Chicken Marsala, Curry Chicken, Pot Roast and Chicken Enchiladas. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up almost 17% for the past year.

The meal kits also take a shot at meal kit providers such as Blue Apron and HelloFresh, which do not have brick-and-mortar partners to help alleviate the cost and complex delivery process associated with the meal kit segment.

Although several other retailers have tried the meal kit option, majority haven't succeeded in this business venture. Those items will remain, according to Lehr.

Given the massive scope of Walmart's grocery business, the meals could depress sales at restaurant chains if shoppers may choose to grab a quick and cheap dinner from Walmart. The retailer has also lost 15% of its share last year, compared to the year before that.

"This is mostly a "me too" move to keep up with other retailers", Livingston said in an email.
