House Passes Bipartisan Bill To Stop Gun Violence In Schools – Does Nothing About Actual Gun Control

House lawmakers tackle gun violence by passing bill that doesn't address guns

By an overwhelming margin the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday afternoon passed the STOP School Violence Act.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the bill will "support evidence-based violence prevention programs".

It's still unclear what the bill's fate will be in the Senate, where lawmakers have been even slower to act in the aftermath of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"This bill aims to do just that", said Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., its lead sponsor.

It was supported by Sandy Hook Promise, the organization that grew out of the elementary school killing of 20 first graders and six adults.

The bill is a revised version of similar legislation that failed to win passage five years ago.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., is an original co-sponsor of the Senate bill.

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters the chamber would pass the bill later on Wednesday.

"All across the country people are sick and exhausted of gun violence, and the time is now for all of us together to stand up to the NRA and pass common-sense gun legislation", Sanders said, referring to the National Rifle Association, a powerful gun lobby, by its initials.

Neither the House nor Senate bills address numerous gun control initiatives backed by students, teachers and families of shooting victims at the Florida school. The two men have also teamed up on legislation that would encourage states to adopt so-called red flag laws, which would give law enforcement the authority to seize guns from people who pose a threat to themselves or others. But the "Fix NICS" proposal was coupled with a bill that would greatly expand the ability of Americans to carry concealed weapons across state lines.

If the bill passes both the House and Senate, Trump would sign it into law, the statement said. Next, the bill heads to the Senate for consideration.

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen.

The Senate's legislation, crafted by Banking Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, mostly provides relief for smaller banks by freeing them from a number of constraints imposed on lenders deemed too-big-to-fail. "So I would hope that we would focus our attention on what is achievable, what is bipartisan, what brings together people at the opposite end of the ideological spectrum". Hundreds of opponents of stricter gun laws gathered in the capitol building, while supporters held a smaller demonstration outside in the snow.

Walkouts, like the one at Kea'au High School, were to last 17 minutes to honor the 17 lives lost in the recent Florida high school massacre.

"Yes, I would support putting it in the omnibus", Feinstein said. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said more and more families are being victimized by mass shootings since a ban on certain semi-automatic weapons she wrote expired in 2004. We've got great ideas.

Speaking to the Senate committee, acting FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich testified that the agency wants to be transparent about its failure to take action in response to a particularly detailed tip that the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, posed a danger. "I'm glad we're getting something done". "But it sure would have been nice to try". "However, we must act on every level to ensure our students remain safe as they receive their education." - said Bergman. Money also could be used to turn schools into harder targets and to install panic buttons in schools to summon help in emergencies.
