Trump asks to share Saudi Arabia's wealth through weapons deals

Trump, Saudi Arabia prince bond over arms deals, hostility to Iran

President Donald Trump meets with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office of the White House Tuesday

US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the situation in war-torn Yemen during a meeting on Tuesday, in talks that covered the Houthi militias, Iranian activity and the humanitarian situation, the White House said.

"Saudi Arabia is a very wealthy nation, and they're going to give the United States some of that wealth hopefully in the form of jobs, in the form of the purchase of the finest military equipment anywhere in the world", Trump said.

Prince Mohammed added that the Saudi pledge for $200 billion in investments would rise to $400 billion when fully implemented, and that a 10-year window to implement the deal was already in place.

Trump says the US has "zero tolerance" for funding of terrorism.

Since then, both countries have been working to restore the relationship, driven in part by "a strategic alignment between Saudi Arabia's interests in the region and those of the United States, mostly centring around controlling Iran's regional reach", Al Jazeera asserts.

"This is a signal that there [are] a lot of things [that] could be tackled in the close future and more opportunities. The deal is coming up in one month, and you will see what happens". Last week, Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, an advocate of staying in the accord, choosing Mike Pompeo, the current Central Intelligence Agency director and nuclear deal critic, as a replacement.

The crown prince could dangle a huge carrot in front of Trump for his support.

Trump and the crown prince looked past that and other points of friction as they dined together in the Cabinet room, flanked by Vice President Mike Pence, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and a bevy of Cabinet secretaries.

As they talked, USA senators debated a resolution seeking an end to US support for Saudi Arabia's campaign in Yemen's civil war, in which about 10,000 people have been killed.

"Iran has not been treating that part of the world, or the world itself, appropriately", Trump said.

The two leaders had already agreed on a plan for about USD200 billion worth of investments from the Saudi side into United States, which includes large puchases of military equipment from US.

He says the relationship between the nations was "strained" during former President Barack Obama's tenure but that he and the crown prince have become "very good friends in a short period of time".

"We are the oldest ally of America from the Middle East", MBS said, "with more than 80 years of alliance and big interests - politically, economically, security".

Even at this nadir of US-Saudi relations, President Obama still sanctioned an unprecedented $115bn worth of weapons to the kingdom over his eight years in office. The bill was defeated and the congress will not limit U.S. military cooperation with Saudi Arabia in the Yemen war.
