Flu season lingers in DC area
With flu season winding down, the number of new cases is falling from the peak of the season, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
"Generally throughout the season, 20 percent of flu is going to be Influenza B - looking at years past and overall", he said, "So now, Influenza A is on a significant decline". However, according to the CDC, a second flu wave may be coming soon, and it could prove to be more severe for young children.
While the flu numbers have dropped significantly since February, the CDC announced to expect another flu wave, particularly the B-strain that affects children in particular. "It's important to remember that influenza B can be just as severe as influenza A and sometimes it can be more severe in younger children".
This is because people can get sick from both types of influenza during one season.
Even if you've already gotten sick earlier this season, you're not necessarily immune to the second wave.
Though doctors are seeing more cases of Influenze B at the start of spring, Bolly says there is no need for patients who've had the flu shot this year to get another one.
"We track all of our viruses and we definitely saw an increase this year in Influenze A and Influenza B virus as well as (what) many states across the nation had reported", Bolly says.
This is because the strain of the flu virus that becomes widespread each year, also changes every year. Experts recommend everyone who is unvaccinated get a flu shot while strains are still circulating. If you think you have the flu, stay home to avoid spreading your germs.
It's been the most active flu season in nearly a decade, killing more than 300 people in North Carolina.
As of Saturday, 207 people in Pennsylvania had died of flu-related causes during the flu season that began in late October and is usually over by May, with 15 of the deaths reported last week.
Winter is over but flu season is not! Alter says children are always vulnerable to the flu.
