Naomi Osaka Wins at Indian Wells for Her First WTA Title

Venus sets up semi-final clash with Kasatkina

Williams

Naomi Osaka of Japan won the women's title 6-3, 6-2 over Russian Daria Kasatkina in a match-up of 20-year-old rising stars. She dropped one set in seven matches.

In the evening session, world No. 44 Osaka broke Pliskova's serve six times in her 78-minute upset on the main stadium court. She also had beaten four former Grand Slam champions on her way to the final: Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams.

Unseeded Japanese Roger Federer has earned a spot in the semi-finals of the Paribas Open here after beating Hyeon Chung in straight setsOsaka overcame World No. 1 Halep 6-3, 6-0. "I think we were both nervous at the beginning, because [this was our] biggest finals so far".

Osaka's coach told her not to worry about what Kasatkina was doing.

"I give Sascha a lot of credit", said Chris Evert, the former No. 1 who has watched Osaka often in Boca Raton.

Things did not improve much from there for the Romanian, who committed 27 unforced errors and looked some way off recapturing top form in her return from a foot injury that forced her to withdraw from last month's Qatar Open.

Just as she is hilarious in her press conferences, so the public got to see first hand the unfiltered Osaka as she giggled her way through her acceptance speech.

Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka will have little time to celebrate in her first career victory with the Japanese drawing eight-time champion Serena Williams in the first round of next week's Miami Open. "It's a new feeling for me to be this consistent, so I'm just trying to be happy about that".

The opening set was even until Osaka blasted two aces to take a 4-3 lead.

Osaka (20 years, 153 days) is the youngest Indian Wells champion since Ana Ivanovic (20 years, 138 days) lifted the trophy in 2008.

"I feel like I have made it my goal to be more focused every match this year, so I think it's paid off", she said. Kasatkina held at 5-2 but won just one point on Osaka's final service game.

Osaka has also now proved that she has the temperament and calmness under pressure to deliver on the biggest stages, against the biggest opponents.

The 20-year-old then embarked on what she expected to be quite a poor victory speech.

"Hi, I'm Naomi, '" she started Sunday's, quickly adding "OK, never mind". Del Potro trails in their series 18-7.

Power and aggression do play key roles in Osaka's armoury but it is controlled power and measured aggression. She owns wins over all four current Grand Slam titleholders in the past year.
