League football in Greece suspended indefinitely

A Soccer Match Was Suspended When One Team's Owner Invaded The Pitch With A Gun

Greek football match stopped after team owner invades pitch with a gun

But as he walked onto the pitch, it became visible that he had a hand gun placed in a hip holster.

"We are in communication with UEFA and the Championship will not resume unless there is a new and clear framework agreed by everyone so we can move forward with rules and regulations".

Yet a few weeks later, another match in PAOK's Toumba stadium had to be abandoned after a cashier roll thrown from the stands hit the Olympiakos skipper.

PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis might have deserved a red card for this.

Greece indefinitely suspended its Superleague football fixtures on Monday after the owner of the club PAOK Salonika was filmed wearing a gun holster as he strode onto the pitch to protest about a disallowed goal.

"There were no threats made by Ivan Savvidis, especially not involving the use of a weapon, during yesterday's match", she said.

Vassiliadis also said the suspension will be indefinite until everyone involved agrees to "much tighter rules on issues of security".

The warrant accuses Savvidis of violating sports law by invading the field, though other factors that were at play will also be examined, according to Greek police. Federation Internationale de Football Association said it is "aware" of the incident and "fully condemns such behaviour" but added that any disciplinary measures "fall under the jurisdiction of the Greek FA".

Savvidis, who took over PAOK in 2012, is a Russian-Greek businessman born in Georgia during the Soviet era who made his money with the privatization of a cigarette factory in southern Russia in the 1990s.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is now on a tour of the United States, said yesterday that the government had repeatedly pledged to tackle the shortcomings of the league but has done nothing.

No word on when the Greek Superleague will start back up.

Greece wasn't the only major European league affected by a pitch invasion over the weekend. He wasn't alone but invaded the football pitch with his bodyguards in tow.

PAOK says it will appeal again, demanding that the game with Olympiakos takes place. "There will be no further comment at this time".

And we thought the scenes at West Ham were bad.
