CIA Director Mike Pompeo has been tapped to replace Tillerson. The foreign minister only met with him in September of a year ago. "I think Secretary Tillerson did a great job", said Georgia senator David Perdue. The abrupt announcement ended the turbulent tenure of the man who reportedly called the president a "moron" but wanted to stay, and deepened the disarray in the Trump administration. Outside the White House, Trump explained that he liked Tillerson, but the two butted heads too often on too many issues.
Trump sees three defects in the deal: its failure to address Iran's ballistic missile programme; the terms under which global inspectors can visit suspect Iranian nuclear sites; and "sunset" clauses under which limits on the Iranian nuclear programme start to expire after 10 years. And I've also spoken to White House Chief of Staff Kelly, to ensure we have clarity as to the days ahead.
"Expect Pompeo to play a protagonist's role in avoiding the entrapment of previous USA administration engagements with North Korea by holding absolutely firm on the United States' desired end state -denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and an end to the North Korea ballistic missile program". It set new targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and was hailed as a significant step towards slowing global warming, though critics argued the emissions targets weren't ambitious enough and have questioned if countries will meet their goals.
"With Mike, I've had a very good chemistry right from the beginning", Trump said Tuesday.
Tillerson's position: Tillerson expressed support for the Paris climate agreement during his Senate confirmation hearings, saying he believed in global warming and thought it required a "global response".
Clearly, Trump does not want a secretary of state, or any Cabinet colleague, who ignores his tweets and gets on with the job. "You're losing what appeared to be a key player, or someone who should be a key in the Trump administration".
Trump announced the changes in a morning Twitter post and later told reporters more about why he removed Tillerson.
Trump specifically cited the Iran nuclear deal, which he wanted to pull the US out of against Tillerson's recommendations. He has also criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the election and potential ties to his campaign. "It's Trump's line", said a another European diplomat. He has said that Russia's election meddling poses a threat to the USA and other countries and told Fox News last month that Russian Federation was already trying to interfere in the 2018 midterm elections. "Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!"
However, Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein and other State Department officials said that Tillerson hadn't learned he was being dismissed until he saw Trump's early-Tuesday tweet, and hadn't discussed it directly with the president.
"Pompeo may be more effective at running State than his predecessor, but he is not prepared to manage the regional or global policy coordination needed to help the summit with Kim succeed", he said.
