The injuries continue to mount for the Seattle Mariners, who will be without outfielder Ben Gamel for four to six weeks due to a strained right oblique muscle.

The Mariners could seek a free agent like Jon Jay or Carlos Gonzalez, though would likely offer just a one-year deal.

The Mariners have not reached the postseason since Ichiro's historic rookie season in 2001, when he was both the American League MVP and Rookie of the Year while leading Seattle to a league-record 116 wins in the regular season. The left fielder joins a list of already ailing Mariner outfielders, with both Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia now sidelined with injuries.

Ichiro last played for the Mariners in 2012 before being traded mid-season to the New York Yankees.

Suzuki came to Seattle in 2001 after playing 9 years in Japan.

Suzuki, a Japanese player who ranks 22nd on the all-time list with 3,080 Major League Baseball career hits, has said he wants to play until age 50.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the Mariners are close to finalizing a one-year major-league deal with the 44-year-old outfielder.

Gamel hit.275 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs in 134 games last season for Seattle. He has stated that he wants to play until he's 50, which doesn't look out of the realm of possibility. Heredia recently made his spring debut and has had a couple of at-bats, but he's more of a depth piece and fourth outfielder than an everyday option (though he could handle left field on a short-term basis with Gamel out).
