An Ohio hospital where approximately 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos may have been damaged by a storage tank malfunction has apologized to patients and said it will do "everything possible to address the situation".

The temperature in one of the site's two liquid nitrogen tanks storing specimens at University Hospitals' UH Fertility Center in suburban Cleveland rose above acceptable limits overnight Saturday, according to the Plain Dealer.

The failure resulted in the temperature in the tank becoming warmer than it should be, which means numerous eggs and embryos in the tank may no longer be viable, according to Patti DePompei, president, UH MacDonald Women's Hospital and UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.

The failure caused the temperature to rise, ultimately making the eggs and embryos at the facility lose their viability.

No malfunction of this kind has been reported at any other fertility clinic in the country, a spokesperson for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine told NBC News.

"Until we know the issue that caused this we will be monitoring the tank 24/7", Liu told Cleveland.com. Patients were notified beginning Tuesday but the hospital shared the problem with news media Thursday evening.

In the case of the UH Fertility Center's compromised eggs, patients will only know if their eggs or embryos are still viable by implanting them.

'We are committed to getting answers and working with patients individually to address their concerns'. We are incredibly sorry this happened.

University Hospitals is considering waiving fees for any future procedures for anyone who had eggs or embryos stored, according to WEWS future.

DePompei notes the temperature spike took place sometime between Saturday afternoon, when staff left for the day, and early Sunday. "We are working painstakingly to decide how we can best help them through the procedure", said DePompei.

On Friday, the fertility center had informed about 700 patients that their eggs and embryos may have been destroyed.

On average, freezing eggs can cost between $12,000 and $14,000. One, Marc Ellis, wrote, "my wife has eggs at that hospital...shes going insane crying all morning...i dont know what to do...."
