A horse was also badly injured in the blast and had to be shot dead in the street, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Similar attacks in in the past have been claimed both by the Taliban as well as by pro-ISIL armed groups.

A health ministry spokesman confirmed that a child was killed and at least nine were injured, all civilians.

The blast was so powerful that some houses, according to residents of Qabel Bai, were damaged in the area.

At the blast site in the Qabil Bay neighborhood, blood pooled on the pavement amid rubble in front of a destroyed building.

The attack comes just days after the Afghan president said he was willing to treat the Taliban as a political party in peace talks.

Security in the capital has been tightened amid fears of more attacks.

At the time, Gen. Abdul Raziq, Kandahar's police chief, said insurgents wearing army uniforms stopped a bus and abducted 30 people.
