Czech Republic Upsets Canada for 3-2 Shootout Win in 2018 Olympic Hockey Game
The Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation scored a 4-0 men's hockey victory over the United States on Saturday to win Group B at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Although Canada won the shots battle by a 33-21 margin, Czech goaltender Pavel Francouz made 31 saves and allowed just one goal in the shootout.
Maxim Noreau of Canada, reacts after failing to score in the penalty shootout against the Czech Republic.
Wolski was the only Canadian to score, stickhandling Francouz silly, but Petr Koukal responded immediately after and Jan Kovar beat Ben Scrivens on the next attempt to give the Czech Republic the advantage it needed.
Mason Raymond and Bourque scored on the power play for Canada in the first period.
Dominik Kubalik (2nd from L) of the Czech Republic celebrates with his teammates after scoring a goal against Canada during the teams' Group A match in the men's hockey tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics at Gangneung Hockey Centre in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on February 17, 2018.
Dominik Kubalik and Michal Jordan scored in regulation time for the Czechs, who edged South Korea 2-1 in their opener.
The men's Olympic tournament is being played without NHL players for the first time since the 1994 Games in Norway's Lillehammer, after the league and the International Olympic Committee failed to agree on covering players' travel and insurance costs.
"We played hard", said Desjardins. Repik, who played 72 games over four seasons with the NHL's Florida Panthers, intercepted a puck as the Koreans were trying to break out of their zone and charged the goal. The Czechs did not help their cause late in the period when Canada defenceman Chris Lee ended up in their bench, prompting an interference call.
Roy opened up the Czech defence with a nifty rush.
The Canadians upped their physical game in the second period, flooring several Czechs.
Somewhat ironically, the loss for the Canadians came almost exactly 20 years after the Czechs defeated them in the semifinals of the men's hockey tournament in Nagano, one that demoralized the Canucks to the point where they lost the bronze medal game and failed to medal. He went down but the puck went to Noreau at the point and his shot found its way to Bourque who, finding a seam between two defenders in front, put it away at 13:30. Scrivens stopped a shot by Michal Birner, but Jordan grabbed the back before pushing it into the net.
"I'd like to have that second one back", Dalton said.
Forward Andrew Ebbett limped off midway through the third period, favouring his leg after being sandwiched by a pair of Czechs near centre ice.
"Ugh", Robinson said afterwards. Its record against the Czechs in Olympic and world championship play fell to 13-14-1.
Chicago Cubs sign top free agent Yu Darvish
The Cubs didn't need to get a whole lot better to be the consensus favorites in the NL Central, but that's exactly what happened. The Cubs also sprinkled some hints at a possible Darvish signing when they brought in Chris Gimenez on a minor league deal.
