John Mahoney, an actor perhaps best known for his supporting role playing the cranky dad on "Frasier", has died.

Mahoney's publicist confirmed the death to TMZ, noting that Mahoney passed away in hospice care in his adopted city of Chicago.

John Mahoney, famously known as Martin Crane, appears on the set during the filming of the final episode of "Frasier" in Los Angeles. He won numerous acting accolades, including nominations for Emmys and Golden Globes.

By 1986, he had won a Tony Award for his role as Artie, a starstruck NY city zookeeper, in the 1986 Broadway revival of John Guare's comedy "The House of Blue Leaves". "Tonight's opening night performance of You Got Older has been cancelled".

He took acting classes at St. Nicholas Theatre which was the start of his professional acting career as he was encouraged by John Malkovich to join Steppenwolf Theater. He was an early company member of Chicago's legendary Steppenwolf Theater before moving to off- and eventually on-Broadway. The theatre invited ticketholders to gather at the venue for a moment of silence. "We were all blessed to have spent 11 glorious years together", Greenberg wrote alongside a picture of the show's cast with Mahoney.

The actor was born in 1940 in Blackpool, England, during World War II.

Mahoney was a distinguished voice actor, appearing in many films fans may never have realised starred the thespian.

Following such jobs as editor of a medical magazine and teaching English at Western Illinois University, Mahoney was nearly 40 when he decided on a late-in-life career change that saw him move to Chicago in order to study acting.

He also enjoyed roles in a number of films, including The American President, Moonstruck, Say Anything and Eight Men Out before working on Frasier between 1993 and 2004.

Mahoney became a citizen by serving in the U.S. Army.

But it's "Frasier and Say Anything" that he will be best remembered for.
