South Africa's Zuma faces new no-confidence vote this…

The party's "top-six" leadership team is due to meet Zuma later on Sunday, party secretary-general and top-six member Ace Magashule told local media including news channel eNCA and the City Press newspaper.

"Our view is that there should be a change of guard", Mashatile told CNBC Africa's Political Capital on Friday. "We want to see a situation where there is one centre with no tension and the best possible way is if the state president exits", he said.

It would need to call a meeting of the party's National Executive Committee to force Mr Zuma to quit.

President Jacob Zuma's future may well be decided today as the African National Congress's top six leaders prepare to meet him following the party's national working committee (NWC) decision that he should step down.

The ANC officials are expected to be led by party deputy president David Mabuza as party president Cyril Ramaphosa has recused himself from the meeting after being advised to do so by other top members of the party.

South Africans will soon know whether or not President Jacob Zuma will deliver this year's state of the nation address scheduled for Thursday.

He added that the best way to handle it was to engage with Zuma in order to show him they were not "booting him out".

The president has been beset by a series of corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.

Zuma is not due to leave office until the 2019 elections.

In public remarks at the event, Ramaphosa did not say if he would be part of the meeting with Zuma, who has been deserted by several prominent allies in the ANC since Ramaphosa took leadership of what is the only party to govern South Africa since the end of apartheid.

Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete would not allow the motion of no confidence to happen so early, but put it on the calendar for 22 February.

Although Mr Zuma retains the support of a faction within the ANC, he no longer holds a top post.
