Russian pilot 'killed in fighting' after plane downed in Syria

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed one of its Su-25 warplanes was downed in Idlib province in northwest Syria, state media outlet RIA Novosti reported.

The Sukhoi SU-25 plane was shot down in Syria's northern Idlib province, where Syrian troops have launched a ground offensive backed by Russian jets.

The de-escalation zones were set up in Syria in May 2017, based on an agreement signed by Russia, Iran and Turkey.

It also raises questions about the source of the apparent "man-portable air-defense system", or MANPADS, a shoulder-fired weapon for which Syria's rebels have repeatedly pleaded from their global backers.

In recent weeks, Syrian government forces and their allies pushed into Idlib, an opposition stronghold, inching closer to a key highway that connects Syria's two largest cities, Damascus and Aleppo.

'There have been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours.

But a witness who spoke to CNN via Skype on condition of anonymity said the jet was shot down by Free Syrian Army fighters with a group called Jaish al-Naser as two jets were "striking the village of Massaran on the southern side of Saraqib".

The use of MANPADS in a province where Turkish forces are nominally present could also anger Russian Federation.

Shortly after Russian authorities put out this statement, warplanes conducted more air raids on the area where the plane was shot down.

Earlier reports said that Syrian governmental forces were fighting against Jabhat al-Nusra units in the Idlib province.

With the help of Russian forces, the Syrian government has managed to take back much of the country held by rebels.

But Idlib remains under militant control, and HTS exercises significant influence even over areas it does not formally hold.

Idlib has always been the region where civilians and fighters have gone as they fled rebel-friendly areas under siege by the Syrian regime.

Despite repeated appeals to their global backers, rebel groups in Syria have never had a sustained supply of MANPADS. In August 2016, a Russian transport helicopter was shot down as it was flying over Saraqeb, killing all five people aboard.

A video circulating on social media shows bearded gunmen standing around a dead man with a bloodied face. According to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, an airstrike on a potato market there earlier this week killed at least 16 people, and the town's hospital was also attacked.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the downing of the Su-25 and said the pilot was killed in fighting with "terrorists".
