Snowboarder Red Gerard became the first American gold medal victor at the 2018 Winter Olympic on Saturday in PyeongChang, South Korea. On Saturday afternoon, the 17-year-old from Silverthorne, Colorado, became the lone US rider to qualify into Sunday's snowboard slopestyle finals, while his mom, dad and all six of his siblings cheered him on from the friends and family section at the bottom of the course.

Parrot's score of 87.36 topped all competitors, followed closely by McMorris in second place with 86.83.

Canadian Maxence Parrot took silver with his final run, tipping compatriot Mark McMorris - the leader after two completed rounds - into the bronze medal position.

Gerard wasn't even born when snowboarding made its Olympic debut 20 years ago, and he now ranks as the sport's youngest US medalist.

The wild-haired, easy-going, smiling teen became the first American to win gold in Pyeongchang. I was a little bummed on my first two runs because I fell a couple of times.

Despite his rough start in the final, Gerard paused to pose for photos with fans after his first run, a sign that he was following the advice of his mother, Jen.

The final will still be held Monday (Sunday night in the U.S.), but all 27 athletes will now compete in the final, and it will be a two-run format.

It was the United States' first gold at the Pyeongchang Games and Gerard made the most of it.

"They really kind of killed it on this course I would have thought the Olympics, FIS, it would have been standard rails and standard hits". Toutant was third in Heat 1 (ninth overall) with a score of 78.01, while North Bay, Ont., native Richardson claimed fifth place in Heat 2 (seventh overall) with 79.21 points. "I'm pretty sure I saw a video of them shotgunning beers at 8:30 a.m., so I'm pretty sure they are doing just fine".

Canada is on the board when it comes to medals at the Pyongchang Olympics.

"Very much so, it is really cool that I can snowboard again", he said. "I just kind of grew up watching Dew Tour and X Games".

After all that, he said Sunday that bronze felt like winning gold. I don't want to have them come all this way for me and not land a run. The top five highest-scoring teams from the short programs advanced to the free program round.
