Corruption getting worse in Nigeria’ — Transparency International releases 2017 index

Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) president Datuk Akhbar Satar said Malaysia scored 47 out of 100 on the CPI's survey a year ago.

The index offers an annual snapshot of the relative degree of corruption by ranking countries from all over the globe. On scale of 100, Pakistan managed to secure 98th position whereas Bangladesh-who split from Pakistan in 1971-has been placed on 93rd slot. The 2017 score is a one point drop from the previous year and a two point drop from the three years before.

The index awarded the east African country a score of 36 points which was a slight improvement from 2016 and 2015 where the country registered a score of 32 and 30 points, respectively.

New Zealand was again ranked 1, with a rank of 89 - a point below its score of 90 in 2016.

No country got a ideal score but New Zealand tops the list as the "cleanest" country - meaning its citizens perceived little corruption, with a score of 89, followed by Denmark at 88. Western Europe had the best average of the regions with a score of 66.

Corruption Perception Index 2017 of Transparency International has given a score of 84 to Singapore. A score of 70 and above is considered generally clean, while a score of 50 and above means not entirely corrupt.

Here, it may be noted that in the past two years, there has been a rise in the number of attacks on journalists and crackdown on the media in India.

Dzulkifli said the country's latest position in the CPI did not at all reflect the aggressive efforts carried out by MACC in combating corruption throughout past year.

Among G-20 countries, Turkey ranked 13th, while its score was second lowest among the 35 OECD member states.

Jamaica's Caricom neighbour Barbados, has been ranked the least corrupt country in the English-speaking Caribbean with a ranking of 25. The most corrupt country in the world is Somalia, with 9 points, ahead of Syria (14 points) and South Sudan (12).

"Countries where rule of law is respected, freedom of expression is respected, freedom of the press is respected" topped the rankings, said Ferreira Rubio, TI chair Delia Ferreira Rubio said.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) plans to create a more effective special corruption index to analyse and measure the level of corruption in the country.

Therefore, TI is calling on all governments that "hide behind restrictive laws" to roll them back immediately and allow for greater civic participation.

Ms Curran also said the Government would strive to further improve public transparency and free access to information.
