Remedial map splits Cranberry Township

Toomey calls for 'conversation' about impeaching state Supreme Court justices

And when Republican U.S. Representative Ryan Costello joined the impeachment parade, that, too was predictable: The new congressional map made his relatively safe district highly competitive. A similar emergency appeal failed earlier this month when it was turned down by Justice Samuel Alito.

At the very least, it's time to figure out if Republicans have the power to reshape the Pennsylvania Supreme Court if they apply to the task the kind of unity they have exhibited in their impressively partisan gerrymandering efforts.

Wolf applauded the court on its map Monday, saying his office would work expeditiously to update Department of State systems and ensure all processes are in place to assist candidates.

Pennsylvania's two highest-ranking Republican legislative leaders are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block a new congressional district map viewed as likely to help Democrats. The immediate analysis was that the new lines would enable Democrats to take over two Republican-held seats in the Philadelphia suburbs and, conceivably, a couple more elsewhere in the state.

In January, the Pennsylvania supreme court ordered the state's legislature and governor to agree to a new map and said it would impose its own map if they failed to agree on one by February 15.

Argall, a Rush Township Republican, said the court did exactly what it criticized GOP legislators for doing.

"The suit will highlight the state supreme court's rushed decision that created chaos, confusion, and unnecessary expense in the 2018 election cycle". However, only 13 counties statewide are split into different districts - including Northumberland. "However, in PA (and many states), achieving that requires conscious pro-Dem mapping choices".

Republicans now enjoy a 13 to 5 advantage in House seats in Pennsylvania, though the state is evenly divided politically. They say the U.S. Constitution only grants legislatures the ability to draw congressional districts and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court can not step in to draw its own map.

That's the former 7th Congressional District seat being given up by Republican U.S. Rep.

Her twin, Monique Lamoureux-Morando, said coach Peter Elander, now at Ohio State, had taught the sisters the shootout move when the three were at the University of North Dakota.

The bottom line: If you overlay this new map onto precinct-level election results in 2012 and 2016, and you'd expect Democrats to win seven or eight seats, instead of just five.

One other thing: as they reduce competition, gerrymandered maps depress voter interest and turnout.

The justices were advised by Nathan Persily, a Stanford law professor with a background in drawing political district maps.

"State and federal GOP officials will sue in federal court as soon as tomorrow to prevent the new partisan map from taking effect", National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Matt Gorman said in a statement Tuesday. But Republicans really ought to think about how this will come across in the court of public opinion.
