Large number of girls may have been abducted by Boko Haram

Cameroon Boko Haram insurgency hits again killing 5

However, Reuters reports that at least 91 students are still unaccounted for following the attack on Monday, and several parents also confirm their children are still missing.

The Nigerian Army has reacted to the Boko Haram attack on Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School at Dapchi town in Bursari local government area of Yobe State, disclosing that it is still unsure if schoolgirls were abducted.

"Now we just heard that they sighted them somewhere and the military is heading to the scene", he said.

So far, 163 of the Chibok schoolgirls have regained their freedom while dozens of the Chibok girls are still with the Boko Haram, nearly four years since the abduction.

The jihadists gained worldwide notoriety in April 2014 when they abducted 276 girls from their school in Chibok, in neighbouring Borno state.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Yobe state delegation to the institution and Permanent Secretary Yobe state ministry of Education Alhaji Modu Ajiri was in the school Tuesday to assess things for himself.

One of the teachers in the school was quoted to have said a headcount was taken after the attack. "We are still hopeful that more are returning soon", he said.

"No one can tell if they were abducted or not".

Suspected Boko Haram operatives on Monday stormed the school carting away foodstuff amongst other valuables. We are beginning to harbour fears the worst might have happened. "After that, we started locating them in one or two, But the school authorities have not been able to account for 30 students", Yobe police commissioner, Sunmonu Abdulmaliki, told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Wednesday evening.

In 2014, the military initially claimed the Chibok students had all been found but was forced to backtrack when parents and the school principal said otherwise.

Girls said to have been kidnapped from the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok are seen in an unknown location in Nigeria in this video still obtained on January 15.

Officials are saying that there were only three abductions, and none of them were girls.

As the issue gained world attention, spawning the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, the then president Goodluck Jonathan was increasingly criticised for his lacklustre response.
