Former Everton and Southampton boss Ronald Koeman named as new Netherlands manager

The Netherlands have officially announced the appointment of Ronald Koeman as their new manager.

The Netherlands have been without a manager since former Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat stepped down in November following the country's failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

During his playing career, Koeman made 78 appearances for the Dutch national side.

Koeman has signed a contract that will put him in charge of Dutch fortunes up to and including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the focus very much on getting there in the first place.

Now 54 years of age and with two decades of coaching and management under his belt, Koeman will succeed short-term boss Dick Advocaat in the hot-seat. The team failed to qualify for both Euro 2016 and the World Cup in 2018, with the path of internal coaching progression left in tatters.

"I'm really positive about the future of the national team - if not, I wouldn't take the job for the next two [years] and the next two after that".

The former Everton manager's first opponents will be England in a friendly at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on 23rd March. "We don't have the best players, but that does not mean you can not have the best team". The best way is so players can handle different systems.

Koeman has been out of work since being dismissed by Everton last October after a poor run of form in the Premier League.
