An elite IDF intelligence unit was successful in exposing and thwarting an Islamic State (ISIS) terror plot to bomb an airliner flying out of Australia at the end of 2017.

He said the information led "directly" to preventing the attack, and applauded the "enormous capacity within the Israeli intelligence-gathering space".

Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton confirmed Australia's spy agency ASIO was assisted by Israeli counterparts. The IDF's Military Intelligence Directorate stated that the team's work saved dozens of innocent lives. The unit is expert in providing a real-time intelligence situation report to all of Israel's various intelligence bodies.

"The Israeli intelligence services thwarted the downing of an Australian plane, an unimaginable slaughter", the Israeli leader said.

"And I can tell you that this is one of many, many such actions that we did preventing terrorism around the world."
"Kol Hakavod to the Israeli intelligence system that not only protects Israeli citizens, but protects citizens of other countries around the world".

The time and route of the flight were not revealed, however Israeli media said the army statement referred to an attempted bombing in July of an Etihad Airways flight due to leave Sydney for Abu Dhabi, which was foiled by Australian security forces before the plane took off.

Lebanese-Australian brothers Khaled Khayat, 49, and Mahmoud Khayat, 32, were later arrested in Sydney and charged with "preparing for, or planning, a terrorist attack".

The bag never made it on board.

Following the arrests, AFP deputy commissioner Michael Phelan said tests of the airport security systems using a mock IED returned a 100 per cent success rate.

An Islamic State operative sent components from Turkey through air cargo to the men in Sydney and instructed them on how to assemble a "high-end military-grade explosive".

Two separate attacks were reportedly planned.

"In the days between getting the intelligence data and making the arrests, they [Australian authorities] had to identify the targets. they had to put them under surveillance and then move as quickly as they could", Professor Barton said.

Australian government has extended its gratitude to Israel for aborting plans by terrorists to blow up an Etihad flight in July.

Four men were arrested in Sydney in July over the plot.
