'Hazardous' asteroid heading for earth is larger than a blue whale
10 February 2018, 06:03 | Virginia Benson
An asteroid discovered last week is due to fly past the earth at 10.30pm this evening.
Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies said, "Although 2018 CB is quite small, it might well be larger than the asteroid that entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, nearly exactly five years ago, in 2013".
Designated 2018 CB, the asteroid is an estimated 50 feet to 130 feet in size, possibly bigger than the one that exploded over Russian Federation five years ago this month.
Anything that comes closer than 4,650,000 miles of Earth is classified by NASA as a "near-Earth object" (NEO).
The path of asteroid 2018 CB, which will come close to Earth on February 10.
The 2018 CB asteroid, thought to be even bigger than the Chelyabinsk space rock which exploded over Russian Federation this month five years ago, will pass within 39,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) of Earth on Friday.
Although 2018 CB could be up to twice the size of that one, this asteroid will be tens of thousands of miles from earth.
At 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, an asteroid named "2018 CC" came within 114,000 miles of Earth.
Another small asteroid passed within lunar distance this week. NASA estimates the asteroid to be between 50 and 130 feet (15 and 40 meters) across. In the meantime, astronomers are on the lookout for asteroids lurking in the cosmic shadows.
That was the case at Chelyabinsk, Russia on February 15, 2013; the incoming object - an intense fireball as it entered the atmosphere - caught everyone by surprise.
