Groundhog Day groundhog predicts six weeks of winter in Gobblers Knob

Groundhog Day 2018: Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow, Ushers In 6 More Weeks Of Winter

This Friday morning is Groundhog Day, and people across the country will be watching Punxsutawney, Pa. - or more specifically, Punxsutawney Phil. German tradition holds that if the sun comes out on Candlemas, the hedgehog will see its shadow and six more weeks of winter will follow. It turns out, according to the Associated Press, that the weather prediction is made ahead of time by a group of humans on Gobbler's Knob, a hill outside Punxsutawney.

Punxsutawney is where Groundhog Day originated on February 2, 1886, and is where a ceremony is held every year.

Phil's Canadian counterpart, an albino groundhog named Wiarton Willie, also spotted his shadow Friday morning. Would winter last six more weeks, or would there be a reprieve?

Meanwhile, across state lines in New Jersey, Milltown Mel predicted an early spring. At this point, flipping a coin may be just as accurate as Phil.

But those worrying about six months of winter should feel some relief: in the last 30 years, Phil has been right just seven times out of 30, based on the government's analysis of United States temperature data. From that date onwards, people have gathered at the spot every day since, which is silly, because a groundhog has zero clue what is going on at the best of times.

Handler John Griffiths introduces Punxsutawney Phil to the crowd at Gobbler's Knob on the 131st Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, U.S. February 2, 2017. The Punxatawny website insists there has only ever been one Phil-throughout all 132 Groundhog Day ceremonies. That means he's predicting an early spring. Given Phil's percentages, this is controversial.

Groundhog Day is said to come from a European tradition called "Candlemas".

This will be Phil's 132nd year making his prediction - he's been able to live that long by drinking from the "elixir of life", of course. That's about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

So far, Potomac Phil's predictions have always agreed with those of his more famous counterpart, Punxsutawney Phil.
