Google Pixel sales still no match for iPhone, Galaxy S series

Google Pixel shipments doubled yet still, only 3.9 million units were moved in 2017

Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones last year, IDC says

Google's only on its second generation of phones (the Nexus phones, which were never driven by a strategy of scale, don't really count), but if you compare its 2017 shipments to Apple's second-generation iPhone, the 3G, which sold 1 million units inits opening weekend, you start to see that it's very clear very few people are leaping onto the Pixel train, despite a lavish marketing campaign.

You can't argue with the fact that Google's Pixel 2 phones have the world's best smartphone camera, even better than the iPhone X.

According to IDC's research director Francisco Jeronimo, Google doubled shipments of Pixel smartphones in 2017 with 3.9 million units sold.

For starters, Google only sells Pixel phones in six to eight countries, depending on the model, so Google is not the slightest bit competitive in the worldwide market.

However, IDC's recent numbers reveal Google still has some way to go, before it reaches market leader status. In contrast, the Google Pixel and Pixel 2 handsets were available for all of 2017.

In comparison, according to IDC, Apple shipped a total of 215.8 million iPhones in 2017, equivalent to about 4.15 million units a week.

Google occasionally dabbles with pop-up stores for the holidays, and it has some dedicated displays inside electronics stores, but it's missing a standalone retail presence. Lastly, Google Pixel smartphones are only available through Verizon, while the iPhone models are available in all carriers. Apple also has deals with all the major carriers in the USA, putting iPhones in even more retail locations with even more salespeople.

A year ago saw Google unveil the Pixel 2 and 2 XL handsets to take over from the original Pixel phones that launched back in 2016. So let's look at the average for the calendar year 2017. Jeronimo said Google doubled its Pixel sales in the a year ago. Lower-end phones lead to more sales, and Samsung matches yearly Pixel shipments every 3.5 days.
