Firmino, Salah help Liverpool heap more misery on Southampton

Liverpool have officially named their starting side and substitutes to lock horns with Southampton in a Premier League clash at St Mary's this afternoon.

The Croatian has become known for making errors in big games this season and has struggled to hold down a place in Jurgen Klopp's side.

"Loris was there. I'm really happy for that because as a Liverpool 'keeper you need special moments to convince the people", Klopp said showing his public support for Karius, who has been under the spotlight for some high-profile errors this season.

After Salah played the ball into Firmino's feet 5 yards outside Southampton's box, the South American proceeded to slide his teammate through on goal with the most sumptuous of flicked passes with his instep, with Salah going on to finish in typically-cool style. It was cold and blustery on Sunday and Southampton's defenders were as physical as referee Martin Atkinson would allow, but Firmino appears to relish such circumstances.

Liverpool are reportedly set to offer Firmino a new contract that will keep him at the club until the end of his playing career. A drop-off from a key player in other teams might have devastating consequences, but Firmino and Salah have more than papered over the cracks.

Southampton did soon begin to settle into the game, though, and Jack Stephens had their first shot on goal when he dragged a long-range effort wide of the target while looking to score for a fourth successive game.

In the eyes of some home fans, this game was a free-hit.

Indeed, the reality of dropping into the relegation zone - resulting from Newcastle United's surprise win over Man United earlier in the day - only heightened the attractiveness of an unlikely three points.

Van Dijk actually missed the win over City and made his league debut against Swansea, but things didn't go according to plan.

Karius then tipped over a Ward-Prowse header as the Saints found some momentum, and the same player had another chance after Bertrand had crossed with five minutes of the opening half remaining.
